Highly energetic abstract pieces created in mixed media technique is an investigation into intuition, the flow of energy and movement that arises through a process that can be best described as play. Bold colors, the contrast of textures, expressive strokes call the mind to let go of its ongoing thoughts and step into a place where the mind makes peace with what it is to be fully engaged in the present moment.
“When I create this series, I stay in an intuitive flow. I play as a kid would. Play is the state of being very present. It is a moment where doing and moving is much more important than thinking. I do not have an end goal when I play, there is no particular meaning, I play with colors, water, and tools that I can find. During play there is no competition, no comparison, there is no direct purpose, no usability. The purpose is the game itself. Movement and sound are the core of this game. The sound provides a gateway into the safe space of the game. The energy of the movement represents freedom of choice. The creation of each piece feels like a dance to me.”
The creative process is an experiment and it can be described as a moving meditation, where the mind is fully focused on the sound of experimental music. Energy, tension, and surprise in the sounds are the direct influencers of colors and strokes. Music is the source of inspiration and body movement is a director behind each painting.
On the process: “I watered down the paint and poured it on to the canvas that was on the floor. Then I would add watered down paint of another color and drip it on to the canvas. After, I hold the canvas in my arms and let the paint drip and mix into different directions. I put the canvas on and of the wall and move it around. It feels like a highly energetic exercise. The moment when one color merges into another is like fully letting go of control and inviting the possibility of anything onto the canvas. Observing the merging of the colors becomes a metaphor for fluidity in life, letting go of the control, and exploring the possibility of surprise or letting the possibility arise itself.
It is a game of letting go of control and outcome, just being an observer that can happily watch what is to come. Letting the paint do the work, not getting in the way of the paint."
